“Polyphony & Materiality of Book Design” is a book exhibition curated by the Reserve Land Design Library, focusing on the musical qualities of typography and the approaches of achieving materiality within the context of Japanese book design. The musical notes are the basic and simple element, but the music it combined can be infinite and rich. Visually, the meaning of “polyphony” allude to the graphic design of multiple languages or a single language, which is a reminiscent of music, while “materiality” emphasises the physical manifestations of book itself and the content it convey. In an attempt to demonstrate the musical aspect of multilingual typography, two of the most popular fonts were chosen: the regular script and the TIME fonts. Then, the text is artistically processed with lines in an effort to merge the two fonts into a visual expression in order to enhance the quality of materiality.
