Amid the prevailing trend of "National Chic" and the widespread popularity of bold typefaces, HanYi Wanfeng Song responds to the longing for a serene and gentle aesthetic with its understated elegance.
Awarded the First Prize in the 2020 HanYi Type Design Competition, this typeface draws inspiration from the stage-direction letterforms found in the Ming Dynasty Zhejiang edition of Selected Yuan Qu. Rather than a straightforward reproduction, it refines and reinterprets the transitional stylistic features of its source. The characters are tall and slender with a high center of gravity, evoking the grace of "a jade-like tree in the wind." Structurally, subtle upward tilts in horizontal strokes and gently curved vertical strokes create a dynamic yet tranquil quality, reminiscent of "willows in the slanting sunlight, pear blossoms in the drizzling rain."
To convey its gentle essence, the designer softened the inherent sharpness of the woodblock-print style, rendering nearly every corner with smooth, flowing curves. Its outline is defined by concise anchor points and jade-smooth strokes, particularly in the sweeping arcs of the撇 (left-falling) and捺 (right-falling) strokes. These feature more relaxed, elegant curves and delicate contrast, evoking the caress of an evening breeze and forming a distinctive visual hallmark.
Furthermore, HanYi Wanfeng Song is a complete typeface family with six weights ranging from light to bold, enabling flexible adaptation to complex hierarchical typographic needs. It stands as an outstanding font that harmonizes classical charm with contemporary functionality.
